Black History Month 2026: Reflecting and Looking Forward

As Black History Month comes to an end in Stockport, we are reflecting not only on what has been achieved, celebrated and shared throughout October, but on what happens next.
It has been a fantastic month. Across exhibitions, gatherings and conversations, people came together to celebrate our histories, amplify voices, recognise contributions and share culture, food, music and stories.
A particular highlight has been taking a significant step forward in partnership with Stockport Council to celebrate Black History and launch the Stockport Anti-Racism Framework.
What Happens Next?
This is important work, and it deserves recognition. But launching a framework is not the destination. It is the beginning of a commitment that must translate into meaningful, visible and lasting change.
So as we close Black History Month, the most important question we can ask ourselves is: what can we do differently now?
How do we move beyond awareness and celebration towards action, accountability and systemic change? How do we make sure the voices and experiences of all our communities are not simply heard, but actively shape decisions, policies, services and opportunities throughout the year? And how do we make sure the Anti-Racism Framework becomes something people genuinely feel part of in their everyday lives?
For us, the challenge now is to maintain the momentum, be honest about where we are, challenge what isn’t working and have the courage to do things differently.
We Want to Hear From You
Black History Month may be coming to an end, but the work certainly doesn’t. Let’s make sure that what we started in October becomes the work we commit to every month.
We would welcome your thoughts, reflections and challenge:
What should we be doing differently in Stockport now?
What needs to change?
What should our priorities be as we move forward?
How would you like to get involved?
Celebrating progress is important, but creating change is essential.
Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who made this month possible, including One Stockport, Sector 3, Stockport Stand Up To Racism, The Zebra Partnership, Rising Stars NW CIC, Stockport Homes and Equality Stockport. We also want to give a warm welcome to our new group, the Stockport Hindu Association, who joined us in celebrating Diwali.
